A look at the past year

Standard

Thursday marked one year living in Japan. So much has happened and time has flown by. I can’t believe I’ve been here for a year. I’ve almost finished my first year of teaching (thank goodness) and I’m so excited to start my second year. My kids have grown and learned so much since April. I don’t want to send them to K5 but I know they’re gonna do a great job. They’ve taught so much and I’m so thankful I was given this opportunity.

This past year I’ve experienced so many things that I never imagined I ever would. I’ve traveled to Vietnam, Taiwan and around Japan. I wouldn’t trade my time here for anything. Luckily I’ve made great friends who I know I’ll have forever and have made my time apart from my family unforgettable.

Here’s a look at my past year.

All in all I’ve had a fantastic year. I’ve had so much fun and I can’t wait to see what this year has to bring. 🙂

A Whole New World

Standard

Things have been so crazy since I started teaching in April. Time has flown by and I’ve loved almost every minute of it. My coworkers and I put so much time and effort into what we do. Sometimes I spend more time at work than I do at home. At the time I’m not happy about it but, after a big event I’m proud of what I’ve done.

I absolutely love my kids. Words cannot describe how much they mean to me. I can’t imagine giving them away at the end of this school year. They’ve come so far in the few short months I’ve been with them and I can’t wait to see how much more they grow.

Here are some pictures of my time so far.

A class picture from the first month of school.

A trip to the garden where we planted potatoes.

A class picture on Red Day.

A class picture from water play this week.

My Unit Two board. (rain and flowers done by my class)

Tokyo!

Standard

For two days this week I went to Tokyo. It was awesome but an extremely exhausting experience. On Tuesday evening we went to meet the night bus that was going to take us to Tokyo. Well that wasn’t nearly as easy as it sounded. To make a long story short, we were at the wrong bus stop and missed our bus. When we finally figured it out half an hour later we some how managed to find another bus going to Tokyo. We had to pay for a new ticket but at least we made it there. We arrived at 5 in the morning and as soon as a Starbucks opened we sat there and planned out our day. Image

The first place we went to was the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. The Sakura had just started blooming and the views were awesome. 🙂

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Japan is absolutely gorgeous!

That night for dinner I got to eat American food. More specifically I got to eat ribs and they were delicious! I think they might have been the best ribs of my life. Although, that could be because it’s been a while since I’ve had ribs. This is my “Hurry up and take the picture because I want to eat these amazingly delicious ribs” face.

ImageImage

That evening we went to Tokyo Tower. It was mega exciting. The views were incredible and worth every yen.

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

The next day we decided we would go to Ueno Park Zoo and to the oldest amusement park in Japan. I’m sure we would have done more if we hadn’t been so exhausted. Night buses and Hostels don’t let me rest very well but, I had a great time none the less.

ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Overall, Tokyo was very exciting and I loved the getting the chance to see it. I hope to go again soon so that I can see more of it.

This is how small some of the cans are in Japan. I calculated and this can holds 3.381 oz of soda. Yeah, that’s enough for one gulp.

Image

I also started a knew collection. I’m now collecting tumblers from Starbucks from places that I go and visit.

And here is a random photo from my trip. 🙂

Now my plan is to finish unpacking and arranging my apartment and relaxing.

Wait?! I live here?

Standard

So after being here for two months, it’s finally starting to hit me that I actually live here! I can’t believe I live here. These past few weeks have been so hectic but overall I’ve enjoyed all of it. This school year has ended and we’re in transition. I got my classroom and my desk this past week. I was probably more excited than I should have been! This week is spring break and I’m so pumped for everything! Yesterday I moved into my new apartment and tonight I’m getting on a bus headed for Tokyo! I’ll spend two days there and then head home. After that I’ll work on setting up my apartment and relaxing.

Here are some pictures of my apartment. Keep in mind that I just moved in and haven’t had a chance to set everything up. Once I do I’ll post more pictures. 🙂

In these past few weeks I also received my first big package from America! I have the best mom in the entire world!! 🙂 ShayLynn also added something to my package as well as a few of my favorite people who work with mom! 🙂

In these past few weeks I’ve gotten to celebrate birthdays of new friends and say goodbye as well. Here are the pictures from when we went to the beach house a few weeks ago. This is one of the places the Tsunami hit so hard three years ago. It’s been an eye opening experience to here their points of view of what happened. My heart goes out to each of them.

I’m so thankful for the opportunity I’ve been given to live in this beautiful country! I work at an amazing place with fantastic people! Also, I’m super excited to see Tokyo tomorrow!!

Am I Dreaming?

Standard

This past week has been exciting and stressful. Some things have gone great and others haven’t but, that’s life. Good thing I have amazing friends at home who constantly help me get through any obstacle. Today, I got to meet my new students and introduce myself as the Puppies Teacher! It was so much fun and so exhausting but I loved every minute of it.

It still hasn’t really hit me that I actually live in Japan. I guess part of me feels like I’m dreaming and that eventually I’ll wake up. I love it here though and I’m so thankful for this opportunity.

Image

I don’t think I realized how excited I was about everything until I saw all of the smiling faces of my students this morning. It was fantastic.

I haven’t done so well with taking pictures lately because I’ve been so busy but I promise to work on that!

I’m really sad that Pandora doesn’t work in Japan so I’m currently trying to train my Itunes Radio to be as awesome as my Happy Station on Pandora.

It has also been requested that I list some things that I want or miss from America. I love Japan but, it’s really different and there a few things I miss.

-Sonic Happy Hour

-Cheese (American): I can’t begin to describe what the cheese is like here but I certainly miss cheese from America.

-Movies: Les Miserables, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, Despicable Me 2, Thor The Dark World, Jurassic Park, Ice Age 4, Frozen, The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, Warm Bodies, and The Avengers. Just to name a few.

-BBQ Sauce. Ranch. Italian Dressing.

-Real Bacon

-Steak and Mexican Food

-Central heating

-Target

Also, I feel like I don’t currently have a life. Since I arrived in Japan (A month ago!!), I’ve finished two books and I’m currently caught up on 4 TV Series. I’m about to start 3 more though. Is this what being an adult is really like?

Aside

These last few weeks have been exciting and hectic for me. So much has happened. I had training last week and part of this week. I started teaching in the class I’ve mainly been observing and I’m still trying to adjust to living in another country. It’s been great though. I love the kids I work with now. They’re so cute and they’ve already stolen my heart. A day with them is never dull and even if I’m tired when I arrive I’m full of energy when I’m with them. Yesterday, I received a copy of my class list for next and I can’t wait! Next week I get to go visit the toddlers and see all my new kids. 🙂 Now, I can start prepping for the coming year.

This past weekend it snowed again. This was a picture I took on my way to work. I know a lot of people here and tired of the snow but I’m still awestruck by it.

Good thing this path is heated so I haven’t fallen too many times.

Sendai is famous for cow tongue and this last week I tried it. I really liked it. It was delicious!!

Image

I really love the fact that there are Starbucks every where! I can say my order in English and it’s fantastic. Enjoy the little things in life.

Image

While at Disney World I tried the sodas from all over the world. There were two I really liked. I had completely forgotten about them until I this drink and realized that I’d tried it before. Melon Soda. 🙂 Yay Japan. Don’t expect a refill though.

Image

Sakura Ice cream. I tried it. It wasn’t what I expected but it was still good. I’m so excited for Sakura season, even if it is a few months away!

Here’s a picture of the kids I work with playing. 🙂

It’s all Fun and Games until Someone gets Hurt!

Standard

This past week has flown by! I cannot believe that I’ve been in Japan for two weeks. That’s crazy to me! I’m having the best time of my life here! This weekend I went exploring (well more shopping) with a few of the girls and we had a great time. It also snowed so much this weekend! Apparently, that’s the most snow that Sendai has seen in 24 hours in 70 years! On Monday the kids didn’t have to go to school but we did. I had never shoveled snow before but I can’t say that anymore! Here are some photos of the snow.

This is the view from my apartment before I went out on Saturday afternoon.

This is when we came back to the apartments and the trail had mysteriously disappeared. Hmmmm, I wonder where it went?

Image

This was my view the next morning. I think it might have snowed some.

And this is part of my campus covered in snow. It’s beautiful.

Today is a National Holiday in Japan. Today is Founder’s day. How did I spend my first holiday? I went sledding for the first time! I had so much fun but it was a dangerous experience for me. I’ll try and post the video for you. First off, we went down a little hill and I loved that. Then we went for a bigger one where we made our own trail and spent a little while going down trying to pack the snow. Everyone was sledding on their stomaches and telling me how much faster you go. I decided to try it and had Katy film it for me. Right before I went down I said “Katy is going to film it so we can see when I crash into that bush.” Little did I know that was ACTUALLY going to happen. Anyways I went down the hill and crashed into a bush. I managed to break a branch off and leave a human sized hole in it.

 Image

Yup. I did that. This is also what a laughing Melody looks like who lost her sunglasses after smashing into a bush. (I did find them so don’t worry!)

Image

At this point my face hurt and I realized that my ear was bleeding. I’m all good now but it really was an adventure! I had so much fun and I would love to do it again. Except without the whole bush thing.

I’m having a great time in Japan! I’m so glad I decided to take this leap of faith. 🙂

Life in Sendai

Standard

So, since I’ve moved to Japan so many things have happened! I’ve been to the grocery store, a few shopping stores, bough tea, had sushi, ordered Starbucks and Ice cream, and so much more. I still haven’t unpacked though. I’ll get there though. Actually, I think I’ll do that today.

Here are some pictures of the amazing campus I’m going to be working at. I haven’t gone down all of slides yet but I will soon. I want to take a slide tour and video it so everyone can enjoy them with me! ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Remember that these slides are for children! Ha, I’m so excited. Also, I think it’s fantastic that we have our own petting zoo. Although, I hear that the ponies can be rude to the adults sometimes.

I’ve never felt so blessed in my life! Not only do I get to work in such a beautiful place with great people but also, I have such an amazing family and fantastic friends at home who are constantly supporting me. When did I get so lucky?

I don’t have picture of my apartment yet but after I clean up and unpack I’ll post those.

The Beginning

Standard

The last few days have been a blur. I feel like I’m sitting on a merry-go-round while someone pushes me as fast as they can. So many things have happened and I can hardly believe that a few days ago I was halfway across the world. I should probably just start at the beginning.

On Tuesday morning I got up, dressed, and hauled all of my belongings that I was taking to the car. Mom and I stopped at Starbucks and headed to the airport. When we got there we had to wait forever and a day (at least) for someone to let me check in with my bags and everything. Apparently the airline I was flying shuts down for an hour and a half in the morning. If I’d known that I would have slept in longer! Anyways, I was so nervous about how much my bags were going to weigh and then the guy didn’t even weigh them! He asked me if I knew how much they weighed and I told what they should weigh and he said okay and sent them all through! So much for freaking out over how much my bags weigh. After that I had to do something I didn’t want to do, I had to tell my mom bye. I miss her.

Not having a phone on the plane journey was difficult. I couldn’t play candy crush. I know, first world problems. I couldn’t call or text people to tell them that I was safe and okay. I felt like I was missing something. Which in all honesty is sad. I shouldn’t be so attached to a device, but that is the world that we live in today. I was however very grateful that I had my Kindle and that there was Wifi in the DFW airport. This way I could let people know that I had made it to Dallas safely and would soon be boarding my plane for Japan. I still remember exactly what it felt like when I walked onto the plane. It was the “no turning back now” moment.

I made notes on the plane so I would remember what to write about and hopefully I haven’t forgotten anything important.

First of all, the plane ride didn’t feel like it was 13 almost 14 hours (I’ll explain why later) long. Maybe it’s because I spent so much time reading. I probably would have finished my book if my Kindle hadn’t died or if I could have charged it. Anyways, the seat to my right was empty which surprised me but I was glad to have the extra room. I mainly used half of it to put my extra stuff in while the guy on the other side of the empty seat used it to lay down. I might have used it to lay down if I’d slept more than an hour the whole plane ride. I don’t do well sleeping on planes. Planes make my butt hurt sitting that long. I think that’s more miserable than anything else. Everything on the plane was in two languages and that was awesome. So about halfway through the flight I needed a reading break and I wanted to watch some of the movies and Tv shows on the plane. I hadn’t taken the free pair they’d offered me at the beginning of the trip because I knew I’d packed mine. Then, of course, I couldn’t find them. So the first half I had some of the shows and movies play while I read even though I couldn’t listen to them. I did decide that I wanted to be able to listen to them when I was eating. So I finally asked for some. They were great and I got to watch two episodes of The Big Bang Theory with sound! After that break I decided I would go back to reading until my Kindle died and then I could watch Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 and Despicable Me 2 and by then the plane should be landing. This was a great plan until I broke the headphones. I really have no idea what happened but I’m sure, knowing me, that I did something ridiculous and didn’t even know it! I did go ahead and watch the movies after my Kindle died, I just didn’t get to hear them. It was kind of depressing. So I had a few more interesting things happen while I was on the plane. One thing I found comical was the coke I ordered. While examining the can I realized that it was not in english nor was it in Japanese. No, instead it was in Portuguese. Maybe American Airlines got confused when they ordered more Coca-Cola for the U.S. to Japan flight. I don’t know. One thing I found on the plane that I thought was super cool was the flight path option on my TV screen. This option allowed you to see exactly where you were flying and then told you how far you had left, in distance and time, what the weather was like at Narita, and the times. The times part was my favorite! It would tell me the local time in Tokyo, the local time at DFW and the local time at where the plane was at that moment! So what I discovered on the plane was that I went back in time 6 hours and then we hopped over the International Date Line and I was suddenly 20 hours into the future. I then went back in time again, I know this is all very confusing, and now I am currently 15 hours ahead of what I like to call “real time”. That being said, I am now referring to Japan as “the future”. That’s what it feels like to me, in some ways. Now going back to the flight plan. We literally flew up and over Alaska before coming back down to Narita. Don’t ask me why but that’s how it worked.

When I finally touched down in Narita I headed to immigration, got my bags, went through customs, and then met up with some of my staff. From there we loaded our luggage into a truck and hopped on a bus headed towards Sendai. On the way we stopped and had dinner. That’s when I learned that apparently doors here don’t just open like they do in American. Even when you stand there moving so the motion sensor can “detect” you it still doesn’t open and that’s because it has a button on it that says “Push”. So yeah, that’s how I came into Japan. Dinner the first night was great, I had noodles, and then we got Starbucks and got back on the bus. It was great getting to meet and talk to everyone but obviously we were all tired. I slept maybe another 2 hours on the bus and finally we arrived in Sendai!

When we arrived in was about 1 or 130am. I honestly don’t really remember. I had some awesome people greet me and help show me around my new apartment. It was wonderful and I love where I am right now. Since I’ve written so much though I’ll wait and tell you about my apartment and everything that has happened in the past few days later. There’s so much going on everywhere and I love taking it all in.

TOMORROW!!!!

Standard

Well this is it kids! Tomorrow I get on a plane and I move to Japan. It’s crazy to think that after dreaming about this and wanting it for so long that it’s finally happening. I just can’t believe it! I can’t even find words to properly express how I feel right now! 12 hours!! That’s how long before my plane leaves. Today has been such an emotional day having to tell my family “see you later” but, I know that fully support me in what I’m about to do. I know I’m super excited for what’s about to happen but at the same time I’m scared to death! Good thing I never really have to do anything alone. I got God for my travel buddy. 🙂 I also have the best support system in the world! Not only do I have an amazing family that supports me 100% but I also have fantastic friends! I don’t know what I’d do without any of them.

My mom is the best, ya’ll! We managed to get both of my suitcases to weigh less than 50 pounds. (By less I mean one weighs 49 and the other weighs 49.5) Go us! Now I just hope I haven’t forgotten anything super important. I have my passport, visa, and boarding passes though so at least I can get there!

Well next time I write I’ll be in Japan. Just let that sink it. I don’t think I fully understand it yet but I know I’m as ready as I’ll ever be! Wish me luck and pray for safe travels for myself and my new colleagues.Â
